WORM MOON IN MARCH: Sowing SEEDS in SOFT SOIL
This month's Full Moon was celebrated by Native Americans and known as the Worm Full Moon, for March is often when the first signs of Spring begin. The soil is softening from the cold winter temperatures and thus the worms begin to hatch and proliferate.
Worms are so important for our soil, increasing nutrient content, improving drainage and aeration of the soil. They consume organic matter, and break it down into small nutrient dense "castings" that benefit the soil and plants, improving soil structure and releasing nitrogen. Meanwhile, providing food for the birds.
Anytime I read philosophical, religious, spiritual or even scientific text in relation to the soil, my mind and heart automatically is drawn to a reference of "The Soul". I mean is there any wonder that one of the biggest concerns of our time is the depletion of the soil, simultaneously a massive depletion of the soul of humanity that is lost in an oblivion of greed, desire and suffering? Our Native American Cultures and Ancient Prophets from Zarathustra to Jesus knew, just as the worms composting our soil.
ZARATHUSTRA & CHRIST
Anzi, my 13 year old daughter, and I have been studying Roman History. While it's not my favorite, due to most of it being all about war, we did go into flavorful teachings today about Christ that led us into reflections from our previous studies in Persian History, when Zoroastrianism was at it's height and said to have so many overlapping teachings and prophecies. In general, Zoroastrianism focused on living a life of "good thoughts, truthful speech, and righteous action" and highlighted the eternal struggle between the light (consciousness) and the dark (unconsciousness) that will end in a Cosmic Battle, in which the light will prevail.
Zarathustra, an Iranian prophet and spiritual figure who was known to evolve humanity and bring about greater consciousness, taught the necessity of seeing the world as not only an illusion, but to see the necessity and responsibility that humanity has to take care of the earth. Thus, this is where we find the first beginnings of that brought about the cultivation of plants, irrigation, pottery, metal-smithing, pottery, and permanent dwellings. While much has sadly been lost from Zoastrian text and parables due to war and oppression, Zarathustra was known to be the first prophet of Christ, which was said to live around 6000BC.
Interestingly, the similarities of Zarathustra and Jesus were that they were both
Born of a virgin.
Baptized in a river.
Amazing scholars with wisdom at a young age.
Tempted by the devil in the wilderness.
Baptized with elements (water, fire, and holy wind).
Cast out demons and restored sight to a blind man.
Taught of heaven, hell, resurrection, judgment, salvation and of an apocalypse.
Believed in One God, called the Lord of Wisdom, he called Ahura Mazda who created the world with light and Truth, who also created countless beings.
He used a sacred cup and Eucharist.
He was referred to as the word made flesh.
Will return in the 2nd coming to begin the Golden Age
“The way in the World is just one, and that way is Truth”
"Become who you are! There is more wisdom in your body than in your deepest philosophy.”
-Zarathustra
THE SOWER & THE SEED BY JESUS
The teachings from Jesus called the Sower and the Seed, is a great reflection as we enter into the Worm Full Moon. A story of rebirth and transformation of our own body, mind and soul in contemplation of the composted, worked soil that has been softened, allowing seeds to grow into rooted plants that grow nourishing fruit.
The Sower and The Seed can be found in Matthew 13:1 -23. Which reads:
That same day Jesus went out of the house and sat beside the sea. 2.And great crowds gathered about him, so that he got into a boat and sat there; and the whole crowd stood on the beach. 3. And he told them many things in parables, saying:
"A sower went out to sow. 4 And as he sowed, some seeds fell along the path, and the birds came and devoured them. 5. Other seeds fell on rocky ground, where they had not much soil, and immediately they sprang up, since they had no depth of soil, 6. but when the sun rose they were scorched: and since they had not root they withered away. 7. Other seeds fell upon thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked them. 8. Other seeds fell on good soil and brought forth grain, some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. 9. He who has ears, let him hear."
19. When any one hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand it, the one comes and snatches away what is sown in his heart, this is what was sown along the path. 20, As for what was sown on rocky ground, this is he who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy. 21. Yet, he has no root in himself, but endures for a while, and when tribulation or persecution arises, immediately he falls away. 22. As for what was sown among thorns, this is he who hears the word , but then cares of the world and delights in riches that choke the word, and proves unfruitful. 23 As for what was sown on good soil, this is he who hears the word and understands it, he indeed bears fruit, and yields in one case a hundredfold, in another sixty, and in another thirty.
SPIRITUAL GNOSIS
In this story we can see that there are many diversions that can happen as we travel through life's many initiations of the Soul & Spirit, and to simply hear religious and spiritual teachings is not enough. Jesus stressed that in order to grow the fruit of the Spirit, we must UNDERSTAND, to be conscious of his words, which for anyone committed to their spiritual growth, means from a place of experiential inner inquiry and insight, which was emphasized by Buddha, known as Siddhartha Gautama who came 5 centuries prior to the birth of Christ.
Jesus was urging his people to go beyond hearing into knowing the nature of our reality. Which is moving from a path of belief into the path of spiritual gnosis, which means knowing.
While there are many practices that we can use to bring us into inner gnosis. Shamanic Journeying and Depth Hypnosis have been incredible tools of healing and gnosis for not only me, but those who have chosen to work in this manner, as well as my clients. It would take me an entire book to explain the incredible insights I've had with the powerful inquiry of Shamanic Journeying alone. Not to mention my daughters, who I have been taking on journeys since they were little.
Spiritual inquiry and the insights received nourish and enlivens the soul. A process that composts our suffering into insightful wisdom, seeds of truth, that continues to soften the heart and soul that desires only for truth. These discovered seeds of truth root into the earth and grow stronger day by day, fed by an ever growing devotion and dedicated inner reflection that turn to luminous insight and guided willful action. A tree ripe with nourishing fruit.
So here we go, into the Worm Moon. I'm so excited to journey with you on Thursday!
What do you wish to compost into seeds of truth and magic?
In other words, think of a hardship you had this month that you are ready to transform and turn into something that will strengthen and nourish the soul?
I’m here to hold you in powerful nurturing space as you journey into the liminal spaces of inquiry and realization.
In Love, Truth & Magic,
Kari Rivers
